World End Economica Episode 1 Review – Windows PC (Steam)

Posted By Eric Kelly On June 27, 2014 at 1:35 pm Comments Off on World End Economica Episode 1 Review – Windows PC (Steam)

World End Economica Episode 1-5While the first episode of World End Economica is up on MangaGamer, Sekaiproject has decided to raise a Kickstarter for a ‘Complete’ version of the game, which will include all three episodes. The game is a visual novel about Stock Trading, and the first episode doesn’t do much to make that concept seem too exciting.

The game’s plot is about a sixteen year old kid named “Haru” or “Hal” has a dream to make a lot of money to achieve his goals, which are revealed later in the story. To this end he has made money by becoming a whiz at stock trading. However, after a series of events, he ends up living at a church and continuing his trading his stock, while entering a mock trading contest. Along the way, his relationships with the residents of the church develop as they continue until the end of the contest. However, the actual development of the characters and their relationship to one another doesn’t grow all that much. It’s more like we learn about each character’s background. The plot mostly drags it feet through a great deal of the game’s about 14 hour run-time. Only near the conclusion of the episode does it begin to become interesting.

Watch_Dogs_RUNNING_ON_LTRAIN__1394239149The recent revelations about what the NSA has been up to as the internet proliferates around us has led many to ask if it’s worth connecting so many things to each other only to have them betray us and our personal data. Watch Dogs has timely inserted itself into this context with a look at how this connectivity can be used by private actors to run rampant as well. While it avoids exploring any of the serious implications of this, this effort by Ubisoft is a fun romp that finally gives us a wider glimpse of what it would be like to play in a cyberpunk sandbox.

Monochroma Review – Windows PC (Steam)

Posted By Eric Kelly On June 18, 2014 at 10:43 am Comments Off on Monochroma Review – Windows PC (Steam)

Monochroma 2013-06-30 16-56-28-62Every once in a while, you will run across a game game on Kickstarter that promises to be a unique experience, but then you hear the concept and see gameplay footage. You get the sense of where its inspiration is drawn from, with the promise of something more as well. Unfortunately for Monochroma, its prospects are almost as bleak and colorless as the title implies.

Monochroma is about a game set in the 1950’s, in a dystopian city. But the game actually starts on the outside of the city, on a playground, which forms the tutorial for all of the game’s mechanics. Soon afterward your character and his brother fall into a building after its rooftop caves in. Your brother is hurts and can’t walk, so you need to carry him on your back at times. Of course this makes jumping harder due to the added weight. So you will need to temporarily leave them behind at designated spots where light shines. This is because they are afraid of the dark. You can’t go too far though, so figuring out the best way to traverse a room and solve its puzzles before moving on will be your task for most of the game. Its puzzles are rather simple, and there are some secrets to find for achievement hunters. But don’t expect a long list, as the game is only about 3-5 hours long.
