The WarioWare series from Nintendo has always been unique in its own class. Where else can you do crazy mini games that are truly unique, from drinking water to sticking your finger up your nose, Nintendo has a unique series with these “few second mini games”. This time around, WarioWare D.I.Y lets you create your own unique mini games yourself on the Nintendo DS/DSi.

While there are a few mini games for you to try out, the main guts of the “game” is to actually create a game with Mario Paint style controls. Don’t worry if you have never created a game in your life, take the time to try out the tutorial which will easily get you into game development in about an hour. WarioWare D.I.Y. uses simple terms during the tutorial to explain how to place items around on the screen and place switches on them to activate them and how to make the mini game win or lose for the player.

The game creator has lots of features: You can create your own game sprites, create short music clips for each level, paint full backgrounds for your game and even upload them for play on the Nintendo Wii or DS. Since this is the DS version, you can only create “tap the screen” type mini games, it’s kind of odd you can’t drag across the screen. This is kind of strange as you could easily create a “hole” of some sort and drag objects into it, but alas you can only make games that involve tapping the screen.

If you don’t feel like creating a mini game from scratch and drawing everything, you can even edit the existing games on the cartridge and make them your own. You must however finish all the mini games before you can edit them in the game creator. The music creator might be the least used item if you have no musical talent but it is very nice to see this was included with the game for budding musicians who know how to write music.

What is lacking is there is no microphone support or camera support for the DSi, this is extremely odd as it would had been great if you can take a picture of an apple for example and put it into your game or record your own “You Win” audio for your mini game.

Once your mini game is created, you can send it to other DS’s or even Nintendo Wii’s via wireless and friend codes. The only issue is if your friend is using a Nintendo Wii, they must purchase the WarioWare D.I.Y Showcase from the Shopping Channel in order to play your mini game.

If you need a break from your game creation, simply use your DS and WarioWare D.I.Y. to check out the showcase yourself and play some games that other users have created. You can also find some unique games created by famous Nintendo of Japan developers on a weekly basis and play them on your DS/DSi.

Gameplay

It will take some time for you to create your first mini game from scratch, but once you get the hang of it, it is a blast. The build in games are also quite fun, and fully editable once you have played them.

Graphics

Good graphics for the mini games, creating your own is easy in the game creator.

Sound

The signature victory music and losing songs are all new and of course you can create your own.

Overall

Great fun if you have the time to create your own games and then share it with the world. The bonus is that there are over 30 fun mini games already included and more from the online WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase for you to play as well.
