Android tv boxes from China are the norm these days, there are a few “commercial boxes” out there but none are suited to gaming. They either don’t have enough memory or the cpu is just plain slow, Ouya on the other hand has pretty sweet specs:

– Tegra3 quad-core processor
– 1GB RAM
– 8GB of internal flash storage
– HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
– WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
– Bluetooth LE 4.0
– USB 2.0 (one)
– Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
– Android 4.0

The only thing we find lacking is only one usb port and no micro sd slot. They claim it will be already rooted, so hackers can make their own firmware (Google Play store anyone?) and it only costs $99 to get one shipped to you in the U.S. ($20 more if you are outside of the U.S.). The first units will ship in March 2013.

Here’s a nifty video Ouya released:
