The Playstation Mobile store has a lot of games in its marketplace, and while there are many simple games on the store, there are occasionally some decent ones. UFO Dad is one of those simple average games that has entered the store.
The game is about a family who for whatever reason have decided to stop an alien invasion using the Wonder Spatula, which is apparently a part of the reason they invaded the planet to begin with. It holds a power the aliens desire I guess. Anyways after that silly introduction, players are thrown into the menu where they can play the game, look at leaderboards, view options, or learn how to play and check the credits. After selecting your character and level, you can begin playing the game. It should be noted that the other family members need to be unlocked by meeting various conditions in gameplay.
Gameplay is done by matching up various colored burger block of three or greater. The bigger the group of burgers before they get sucked in by the tractor beam, the larger the chain bonus and points earned. Blocks an also be flipped upwards when standing on them, in order to get them in a position to be slammed across the screen, or get to safer ground. The blocks can also be swapped with your character’s position by standing still. There are also obstacles like soil and rocks that either need to be dug or traversed. There are also grill blocks that act like a bomb, and clear obstacles but can instantly kill you. You can also jump to get around the environment. The tractor beam can also be manipulated to quickly clear the screen of unwanted blocks, but at the expense of making it faster. Each character also has their own strengths and weaknesses and they each have a special ability. The Dad and Mom can slow down the tractor beam to more easily rack up chains. Ned and Sadie each can turn stones into burger blocks. They also can take a hit from falling blocks once before dying, which is a game over. The special abilities use energy that re-charges with successful burger chains.
The higher the level, the higher the difficulty but the more points earned. The pace also increases, but despite this, the game feels very slow. Typically death only comes to those who either get too greedy or get stuck in a trap. Music also is just kind of there, not being terribly interesting. For a mobile title, it probably plays better on a Vita than any compatible Mobile compatible device, as you actually have buttons, and controls which are very responsive. But for a mobile title it’s also about $3.29 too expensive. Not bad, but you good do with better alternatives. This game is fairly average.
