NekoPara vol 01 logoWhile Sekai Project is no stranger to working on Visual Novels, this is the first one that actually has two versions. Namely an M rated version, and an adult 18+ version. The steam version is the ‘all-ages’ version, with all the sex scenes removed. I feel that this is important to let people know, as they may want to get that version instead. On its own though, the edited version is still a cute little harem story, for those into that sort of thing.

The story is about a young man named Kashou Minaduki, who after getting tired of living the lifestyle that his parents desire for him, moves out and opens his own bakery. As opposed to running the confectionery business his parents run, as he desires to be a baker instead. However in this world, there are actual genetically engineered humanoid cat-girls. And two such cat-girls that were living with him at his former home stowed onto his moving truck, and into his new home, because they really want to be with him. Despite his attempts to send them home, they convince him to let them stay and work as hired help for his store. Of course, over the course of the game they get into misadventures and become his lovers. Yay for polygamy?

So as you can see, the elements of a harem anime style story are set into place, with the next two episodes promises way more wackiness, as this serves as more of an introduction. The story spans about 7 hours over 8 chapters. As previously mentioned, the sex parts are cut and instead you get an ‘aftermath in the bedsheets’ screen just to let the audience know that stuff happened. This likely cuts down the length a bit. One thing that is interesting is that the game does have voice acting, and more to the point it’s actually synced to the character sprites, which are animated. This makes expressions and movements more convincing. This is typically rare for many visual novels, and it looks nice despite being low-budget. Especially as the artwork looks great as well, although the voice acting is in Japanese only, in case you were wondering. In addition, the text can be automatically switched between English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese. It is a kinectic visual novel however, so there is only one path the narrative will take. Also, all the ‘master’ and ‘cat talk’ might turn off some people. It’s total catgirl-hetero male harem fan-service, so if you’re into that sort of thing, go check it out. Thankfully it’s not terribly offensive. And if you want the adult version, you’ll have to go to DLSite.com’s English site and buy it there. Although be warned, it is about double the price. Otherwise the edited version it’s a cute little story on its own merits, and hopefully the story gets more amusing in the next two volumes.

Gameplay

Kinectic visual novel that will appeal to fans of harem anime, while being relatively inoffensive.

Graphics

Despite being low-budget, the high quality artwork is coupled by animated sprites the make expressions more convincing.

Sound

Serviceable and bubbly soundtrack. Voice-acting is present, although in Japanese.

Overall

Nice little harem story in the making with a side of humor, which hopefully will increase in future installments.
