After selling millions and being a cultural phenomenon in Japan, the Nintendo 3DS family of systems role-playing game YO-KAI WATCH is coming to North America. Published by Nintendo, YO-KAI WATCH centres on a boy who gets a special watch that lets him befriend and help mischievous Yo-kai* and later summon them to fight other Yo-kai. Players can overcome challenges and help various characters solve everyday problems with the help of Yo-kai friends. These eccentric Yo-kai resemble anything from inanimate objects to mythical creatures.

After the 2013 launch in Japan, the Nintendo 3DS game became a top seller and was well-received by both critics and players. Along with the anime and manga, the YO-KAI WATCH phenomenon evoked wide-spread popularity and demand for the brand among children.

“With sales of more than 7 million units in Japan, YO-KAI WATCH is coming to North America, where a new audience will be able to experience this irresistible franchise for the first time,” said Pierre-Paul Trepanier, Nintendo of Canada’s senior director and general manager. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a kid, parent, fan or fan-in-the-making: Everyone will be won over by this charming game.”

YO-KAI WATCH is launching in North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Korea, demonstrating its global demand and appeal. Beyond video games, manga and anime television shows, YO-KAI WATCH has generated more than $1 billion in retail sales of toys and other merchandise in Japan, not counting games, music or publishing.

Fossil Fighters Frontier Review – 3DS

Posted By Michael Leparc On April 2, 2015 at 2:14 pm Comments Off on Fossil Fighters Frontier Review – 3DS

Fossil Fighters Frontier_LogoWith how perennially popular dinosaurs are among kids (and even adults like me), it’s a wonder there aren’t more games designed to exploit that fact. Fossil Fighters is a series that debuted here on the DS back in 2009, but mostly slipped under the radar despite some decent reviews. It’s back now as a 3DS title, Fossil Fighters Frontier, but unfortunately it doesn’t do too much for the cause of dinosaur games with its failure to stand out much from the pack of other RPGs like Pokemon.

Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines Review – PS Vita

Oreshika is a game I almost though wouldn’t make the trip across the sea. But the digital platform of PSN, and Sony’s localization and marketing teams have convinced SCEA to bring the title to western audiences. And the game is a solid JRPG experience with a great visual flair, so it was worth the wait.

Nintendo_Direct_LogoWith so much information, it would be easy to dismiss the latest Nintendo Direct presentation as an elaborate April Fool’s Day prank. But the latest Nintendo Direct is definitely no joke. The next evolution of amiibo? It’s happening! Lucas from Mother 3 in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS? He’s joining the battle! The debut of a 200cc speed class in Mario Kart 8? Yup! A new line of Yoshi amiibo figures made of actual yarn? Oh yeah. A home-designing Animal Crossing game? Launching this year! Splatoon launching on May 29 and more details about Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Woolly World and the new game in the Fire Emblem series? It’s all accurate!

“The world of amiibo is getting bigger, better and even more interactive,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “And with existing amiibo support for games like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8 and more, and upcoming support for Splatoon, Yoshi’s Woolly World and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, amiibo continue to stretch the definition of the toys-to-life category.”

Posted By Eric Kelly On March 26, 2015 at 11:00 am Comments Off on Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Review – Xbox One (Also on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 / 4 and Windows PC)

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round LogoDead or Alive 5 has gone through quite a few changes since its initial 2012 release. The first updated was Dead or Alive 5+, then that version was ported and further upgraded on PS3 and 360 as Dead or Alive Ultimate, and now, with the latest port job and added features, you have Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. And well, let’s just say that if you haven’t already bought the game, now would be a good time to do so, as it’s the most comprehensive release yet. But early adopters might just want to stick to the PS3 and 360 versions, as there isn’t really much new here.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Review – Wii U

Posted By Michael Leparc On March 24, 2015 at 2:15 pm Comments Off on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Review – Wii U

WiiU_KirbyandtheRainbowCurse_logoEver since the Wii U’s gamepad was announced with a touch screen, we’ve been expecting some of the ideas spawned on the DS to make their way to the console format. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is actually builds off of the DS hit, Kirby: Canvas Curse. In some ways it’s a game that would have worked just as well as a sequel on the 3DS handheld, but if you can get past some of its shortcomings versus the original, it’s definitely worth grabbing.
