New Trailer for Yakuza: Dead Souls

Posted By Justin Lee On January 18, 2012 at 2:37 pm Comments Off on New Trailer for Yakuza: Dead Souls

Sega has released an all-new trailer for Yakuza: Dead Souls, scheduled for release March 13th, exclusively on PlayStation 3. This video serves as a pleasant reminder that, should you ever find yourself in a Tokyo overrun with zombies, it’s good to have friends… especially friends with shotguns. And, if you think zombies are bad – just wait until you meet the Yakuza.

Yakuza: Dead Souls, this next iteration of the iconic Japanese series, is set in the infamous red light district of Tokyo, which is under attack from hordes of zombies. The game features gunplay for the first time in the Yakuza™ series, where everything from pistols, machine guns and rocket launchers can be employed against the zombie invasion. Players will not only face armies of the undead and incredibly powerful mutants, but a treacherous Japanese underworld that is just as merciless. Playing through the eyes of four of the most infamous characters of the series, witness allegiances shift quickly and the line between friend and foe lost. With all the depth and story of a Yakuza title, plus the addition of exciting shoot-outs and previously unplayable characters Ryuji Goda and Goro Majima, Yakuza: Dead Souls is worth dying for.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon ScreenshotWhen Earth Defense Force first made its way to the Xbox 360 about 4 years ago, it became a bit of a cult hit for fans of sandbox co-op action. Insect Armageddon is the subtitle of its sequel, and also marks the series’ debut on both the Playstation 3 and Windows platforms, the latter version of which is the copy being reviewed here. While not bringing a whole lot new to the table over the original, the new Earth Defense Force hits the mark by expanding its audience and providing great gameplay value at a budget price.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 – Review (Xbox 360)

Posted By Celeste Dobropolski On January 5, 2012 at 11:40 am Comments Off on LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 – Review (Xbox 360)

The days of awaiting a new Harry Potter book passed years ago, and now so have the days of the Harry Potter movie franchise. Harry Potter’s world remains vast despite the story’s summation, and so do the marketing opportunities. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 for the Xbox 360, the latest franchise release developed by Traveler’s Tales and published by Warner Bros, serves as a reminder of this.

LEGO games are wildly popular not only with children, but with nostalgic adults, as well. There’s something to be said for the way LEGOs feel in your hands. They snap together with a click that is the most comforting noise only after the sound of knocking over an entire tower and hearing all the pieces scatter. In digital form, however, I’m not as impressed. I’m a moderate fan of Harry Potter and LEGOs, so I didn’t have any high expectations of how the game should progress. I think it’s fair to say that the progression of the game matches the movie version quite well, and the scenery within the game paints a vivid recollection of locales. The game injects simplicity where other games in this genre opt for overly complicated. New again are the flat, painted backdrops of old JRPGs, and made old are the intricately laid out methods of combat that fall just short of using combination moves in an arcade fighter. Some games aim to create beauty and function in an effortless manner, and this is one of them.
