Skylanders: Trap Team Review – Xbox One (Available on all Platforms)

Posted By Michael Leparc On November 5, 2014 at 4:07 pm Comments Off on Skylanders: Trap Team Review – Xbox One (Available on all Platforms)

Skylanders Trap Team-2I haven’t played much of it before, but it quickly became clear that Skylanders is a series that is very good at what it does, the question is whether you really want what it does, and the answer may depend on your audience and how much disposable income you have. As a sequel, Trap Team succeeds in adding another layer of gameplay and well, purchases to the proceedings.

The tale Skylanders Trap Team weaves is fairly straightforward but holds its own alongside many other offerings for the E for Everyone crowd these days. The main baddie, Kaos, unleashes the worst villains in the Skylands by destroying Cloudcracker Prison. It’s up to you as the Portal Master to bottle them all back up by using your Trap Masters and Traptanium shards (a new class of Skylander and items you must, ahem, “acquire” from your local retailer) that have fallen back to Earth in the aftermath. It’s actually a quite humorous story, with the other villains taking potshots at Kaos, unappreciative of his efforts and talent. The voice acting features a lot of well known names who perform excellently, and when I was streaming the game for friends the first thing out of everyone’s mouth was “Invader Zim!” at Kaos’ appearance. Patrick Warburton returns as bombastic, self-promoting Flynn, which tickled my Seinfeld-loving funny bone. Still, the villain that steals the show for me is the 4th wall shattering Chompy Mage voiced by Alex Ness (who does a great job with Broccoli Guy as well). Anyway, the point is even though the game is for kids, you’ll have a fun time watching or playing with them as there’s plenty of humor to go around.

Fluster Cluck Review – PlayStation 4

Posted By David Klein On November 5, 2014 at 3:44 pm Comments Off on Fluster Cluck Review – PlayStation 4

Fluster Cluck - Single Player Desert StageThe developers over at LOOT Entertainment must have known they had a winning name when they came up with Fluster Cluck. The name embodies everything trying to be accomplished by the game; a silly experience that tries to create hectic multiplayer mayhem centered around chickens.

Fluster Cluck isn’t overloaded with content since there are only two modes, Career and Battle with both being about having four player matches. There isn’t all that much difference between the two modes, career lets you team up with a friend against the CPUs and Battle is just you battling on the maps you’ve unlocked in the game through winning matches and gaining levels. Besides having the maps chosen for you in career I can’t find a real difference between the equivalent modes found in Battle and Career you still level up regardless. The gameplay is rather simple you fly in spaceship which you custom build from a combination of different ship types, which character pilots it, the type of gun it uses and a single equipment that effects your stats in another way, most of these options are unlocked through playing the game.

Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle Review – 3DS

Posted By Eric Kelly On November 3, 2014 at 2:47 pm Comments Off on Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle Review – 3DS

Tenkai LogoOh dear, here we go again. Yet another licensed property game title. And predictably, it’s awful, but just how awful it is could almost be considered a good point. Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle is more of a weak battle if you ask me.

The game’s basic plot pretty much mirrors the events of TV series, and is about four young boys who are granted the power to become the Tenkai Knights, a group of robot mecha pilots that fight against the evil Vellius in his bid to awaken the Tenkai Drago, presumably to control it and take over the galaxy. This is despite failing the first time. Apparently he thinks his strength and willpower are improved enough to do manipulate the creature. This also has the side effect of Planet Quarton crashing into the Earth. So of course the heroes need to stop him. There are bits of story in-between each level, but unlike the show, they lack any depth, as it’s a bunch of talking character head portraits and dialog boxes. There also is very little accompanying voice acting to help with this. Since this is a kid’s show, a lot of dialog will have corny one-liners like ‘becoming Tenkai toast’ and the like. Not terribly interesting stuff, and not done particularly well, even in game form. As for the gameplay, this is where things go completely south.

Iron Fisticle Review – Windows PC (Steam)

Posted By Eric Kelly On October 31, 2014 at 10:33 am Comments Off on Iron Fisticle Review – Windows PC (Steam)

Iron Fisticle logoTwin Stick shooters are pretty common these days, but not many can claim to use a setup that truly makes you feel like you are accomplishing something with every failure. Such is the case with Iron Fisticle.

Iron Fisticle is a twin stick shooter for PC that has an old school arcade feel. In fact, it’s pretty much like Smash TV with how it operates. There are a series of rooms that you need to traverse to get to the boss. The rooms fill with large waves of enemies that progressively get more aggressive with every floor and room. To aid the player against these large odds, you can level up your character, which does a variety of things like increase stats or unlock new sub-weapons. So even though you might have died in that one problem room or boss for the umpteenth time, you will always be making progress. This encourages replays until you succeed. Aside from the sub-weapons which are gained from random chests, you can use a dash attack maneuver to mow down a thin string of monsters or evade bullets. You can also use an Iron Fisticle attack that kills minor enemies or does minor damage to bosses in a radius around the character. Sometimes between each room you can play a forced scrolling platform segments to get coins. The coins are then used at shops to either temporarily or permanently boost your health or stats. Stats include attack power, walking speed, weapon throwing speed, and sub-weapon duration. The sub-weapons range from fast throwing darts to hammers that ricochet off of walls. In addition to monsters there are traps like moving blades or explosive barrels.

Bayonetta 2 Review – Wii U

Posted By Eric Kelly On October 27, 2014 at 3:03 pm Comments Off on Bayonetta 2 Review – Wii U

WiiU_Bayonetta2_scrn09_E3Back in 2010, Bayonetta released on the Xbox 360 and was ported to the PS3. Unfortunately it did not sell well enough for Sega to continue supporting the IP. Thankfully years later announced that it was going to pick up the downtrodden property and give the planned sequel new life. And the result is nothing short of amazing, and the wait was definitely worth it.

The game takes place sometime after the original. After her usual day of Killing angels, Bayonetta has to go rescue her friend’s soul which is trapped in Inferno. On the way she meets a mysterious boy with equally mysterious powers who will aid her on her quest. Needless to say, the story isn’t all that deep. It serves mainly as the setting for all the crazy action that takes place. Combat is largely the same as before, but there are number of welcome design tweaks that make the game a much richer experience.

The Sims 4 Review – Windows PC

Posted By Celeste Dobropolski On October 23, 2014 at 10:56 am Comments Off on The Sims 4 Review – Windows PC

The Sims 4 Logo
The Sims 4 had very large shoes to create, design, and fill. The series has improved with each iteration, spanned countless expansions, and staved off changes that altered the core of the game. Until now. As a game outside of the Sims franchise, Sims 4 would be a pretty good game. It’s basic, and it holds true to many of the tenets that modern gaming stands and sells by. But as a next step in the beloved franchise, it deserves a fair amount of criticism.
