Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy Review – 3DS

Posted By Cristofer Hess On March 13, 2014 at 3:54 pm Comments Off on Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy Review – 3DS

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy 01“Puzzle solving is a most gentlemanly pursuit.” So says Professor Hershel Layton, the most gentlemanly of gentleman archaeologists. In his latest adventure “Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy” for the Nintendo 3DS, you will have hundreds of chances to be gentlemanly – or ladylike – as you help Layton and his companions solve a global and historic mystery, solving puzzles all along the way.

In this game, reported to be the last starring Professor Layton himself, the mystery surrounds a strange girl who has been locked frozen inside a block of ice in a cave for a million years. A million years! How could she have survived so long, and what secrets does she keep? You and the Professor will attempt to find out, by searching for clues, unraveling mysteries, tapping everything in sight to find coins or random objects, figuring out why water won’t come out of a garden hose, making sure a back yard has no two flowers of the same color next to each other, and calculating how long it will take the elevator to go up twenty-five floors.

Chuck’s Challenge 3D Review – PC (Steam)

Posted By Eric Kelly On March 12, 2014 at 4:42 pm Comments Off on Chuck’s Challenge 3D Review – PC (Steam)

Chucks Challenge 3D_00009Chip’s Challenge was released about 20 years ago and it was a very well received PC puzzle game, but it was always a mystery that there wasn’t an IP revival. And almost out of the Blue, a sequel was made and it has been re-christened as Chuck’s Challenge 3D. What we get is a fun little time-waster.

Made by the same person who created Chip’s Challenge, Chuck’s Challenge 3D is a 3D sequel to that title, and the game is more or less a pretty decent recreation of the original title. It’s interesting to see contrast in how much of a graphical leap the game has made, while pretty much retaining all of the original’s gameplay. Instead of playing as a nondescript human male, you are playing as a purple alien. One who has abducted Chuck so he can design puzzle levels for the alien to complete. He does all this because he is a bored thrill seeker; I guess Chuck must have been bored too, as he has no complaints about being abducted.

Electronic Arts Inc. and independent videogame developer Respawn Entertainment announced that Titanfall is now available at retail stores across North America exclusively for Xbox One, the all-in-one entertainment system from Microsoft and on Origin.com for PC.

Since its unveiling last June, Titanfall has seized the attention of gamers around the world with its exhilarating first-person action gameplay centered on the dynamic between elite assault pilots and agile, heavily-armored, 24-foot titans. The game has been praised by critics and fans for delivering a unique, fun and thrilling experience while setting a new bar for online multiplayer gameplay. GameSpot claims “Titanfall is a leap forward for shooters”, while Rolling Stone calls Titanfall “the most anticipated next-generation videogame of the year”.

“Creating Titanfall has really been an incredible journey for our team at Respawn and we’re excited to be able to finally get the game we’ve been making into everyone’s hands,” said Vince Zampella, a Co-Creator of CALL OF DUTY and Co-Founder of Respawn Entertainment. “We’re a small, tight-knit team, and I’m proud to have come together with them over these last few years to create something that we think pushes the boundaries and is above all else fun.”

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Review – Wii U

Posted By Michael Leparc On March 11, 2014 at 10:18 am Comments Off on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Review – Wii U

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze 06Here we are at last (though have we really been waiting that long?), Nintendo’s Wii U reunion tour has finally gotten around to DK and pals in another Donkey Kong Country game. Retro Studios did a fantastic job of reviving the 16-bit series for the original Wii a few years back so they get the chance to reprise the role here with the sequel and the benefit of HD, and it’s hard to argue with the results of what they’ve whipped up in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

The game starts innocently enough with all your favorite Kongs celebrating Donkey Kong’s birthday, until all of a sudden some evil penguins and their armada crash the party, summoning a huge ice dragon and turning their tropical paradise home into an unfriendly ice cube of a landscape. Your job is to conquer back each island on the way to setting things right. Simple enough, right?

Cloudbuilt Preview – Windows PC (Steam)

Posted By Eric Kelly On March 10, 2014 at 2:56 pm Comments Off on Cloudbuilt Preview – Windows PC (Steam)

Cloudbuilt 005Cloudbuilt is an interesting take on the third-person parkour gameplay that was first introduced in Mirror’s Edge. I had the chance to try out the beta, and it looks to be the game to fill in the void until Mirror’s Edge 2 comes out. But it also has its own aesthetic that will provide something different from that title.

The game is set in a dreamworld created by the subconscious mind of the protagonist. She is apparently in a coma after facing incredible trauma, and her recovery program at the hospital is a man-machine interface that lets her slowly recover via training exercises generated by her mind and the virtual reality software that creates the dreamscape levels you will be hurtling through.
