Netgear Powerline AV500 XAVB5201 Hardware Review

Posted By Justin Lee On December 11, 2013 at 2:11 pm Comments Off on Netgear Powerline AV500 XAVB5201 Hardware Review

xavb5201 boxWe’ve all run into the issue of Wi-Fi not reaching that corner of the house or a device that doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Gamers have it the worse with bad pings via Wi-Fi as well and with Smart TV’s that force you to buy an $80 Wi-Fi adapter that only works with that TV. Powerline Ethernet promised that it could turn any power outlet into a network jack, the first generation ones were slow (well under 10 mbps), then came along the promise of 200 MBPS, and now 500 MBPS. Netgear of course has a Powerline AV500 XAVB5201, but does it live up to the promise of 500 MBPS?

Nintendo 3DS System Update Brings Nintendo Network ID and Miiverse

Posted By Justin Lee On December 10, 2013 at 4:43 pm Comments Off on Nintendo 3DS System Update Brings Nintendo Network ID and Miiverse

nintendo network logoA system update for Nintendo 3DS is now available and brings with it new features that enable Nintendo Network ID functionality, as well as the ability to browse and post on Miiverse.

The update will allow users to register a Nintendo Network ID to their Nintendo 3DS system. If they also have a Wii U system, they can use the same Nintendo Network ID to combine their Nintendo eShop balances and Wish Lists. A Nintendo Network ID is required to download free content, like game demos, from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

In addition, Miiverse support has been added, allowing Nintendo 3DS users to connect with players around the world to share experiences and game tips. While the full Miiverse experience on Nintendo 3DS requires a broadband Internet connection, there is also an offline mode for players without access to Wi-Fi. Users can queue up to three posts while in this mode, and those posts can be manually posted to Miiverse once a Wi-Fi connection has been established. As with Miiverse on Wii U, users can include select screen shot content from either the top or bottom screen of the Nintendo 3DS system.

The update also lets Nintendo 3DS owners transfer all of their content to different Nintendo 3DS systems an unlimited number of times, once every seven days. Before the update, users could only perform a system-to-system transfer a total of five times.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Review – PlayStation 4

Posted By Cristofer Hess On December 10, 2013 at 1:15 pm Comments Off on Killzone: Shadow Fall Review – PlayStation 4

Killzone Shadow Fall SP04_008Killzone: Shadow Fall is a futuristic shooter, a launch title exclusive to the PlayStation 4. It’s one of the first games of a (very) new era, a generation of new sights and sounds, graphics and processors and p’s – all 1080 of them – with promises of New and Bigger and Better, experiences like we’ve never had before! Does Killzone: Shadow Fall live up to the hype? Not quite. It’s definitely a pretty game, and it tries very hard to make sure you know it, with long, sweeping presentations of areas, and great detail in the environments. Sometimes the game made me feel like it was trying to show off. “Look at me”, in a tech demo sort of way. Action is fast, and plentiful for the most part. There are things to shoot, places to see, and objectives to fulfill, as you’d expect. But “as you’d expect” is a good description of Killzone.

Soulcalibur II HD Logo
Soulcalibur II hit arcades over ten years ago, and it quickly became a hit, spawning many sequels and spinoffs. All of which failed to live up to the quality of Soulcalibur II in the eyes of many. Fast-forward to present day, and Namco-Bandai saw fit to lease new life on the classic fighter, while adding online play. What player’s get is the same old game, but perhaps the ‘Online’ should have been omitted from the title.

Tom Clancys The Division Logo SmallUbisoft has released new Tom Clancy’s The Division screens and trailer. Setting a new bar in video game realism and open-world rendering, the latest assets showcase the next-gen Snowdrop engine which was specifically developed to create a deep and vast universe.

The Division takes place in New York three weeks after a lethal virus, released on Black Friday, has swept through the city. One by one, basic services have failed. Society has collapsed into chaos. The President invokes Presidential Directive 51, and The Division, a top-secret unit of self-supporting tactical agents, is activated. Leading seemingly ordinary lives, Division agents are trained to operate independently of command in this type of emergency situation. When the lights go out, their mission begins.

In a Tom Clancy universe dedicated to realism, players can explore the once-familiar streets and landmarks of the Big Apple, now decimated by looting and overrun by clans that will do anything to survive. From Central Park to the subway to the Statue of Liberty, nowhere is safe. Discover a persistent, online, open-world New York where exploration, combat, and RPG player-progression are essential.

Batman: Arkham Origins Review – Xbox 360 (Also on PlayStation 3, Wii U and Windows PC)

Posted By Jeff Markiewicz On December 6, 2013 at 9:30 am Comments Off on Batman: Arkham Origins Review – Xbox 360 (Also on PlayStation 3, Wii U and Windows PC)

Batman Arkham Origins 02It used to be best to avoid games that use an already established intellectual property because they usually, quite frankly, sucked. Just look at Superman 64 as a prime example. There was a lot of hype for that title because of the name and then it launched with abysmal reviews. Sure there are exceptions like Goldeneye but then look at every single James Bond title thereafter. For the past decade though, we’ve finally seen the emergence of more and more mature and extremely competent games tackle existing franchises and succeed. One of these emergences has definitely got to be Batman with Arkham Asylum. It was then further refined in Arkham City. Both titles we’re critically acclaimed and very, very well received. This now brings us to the next title in the series, Batman: Arkham Origins. There is one slight difference this time around though, as the first two titles were developed by Rocksteady, this one was tackled by Warner Bros. Games Montreal. The Arkham franchise is undoubtedly great but in new hands, can it be just as good?

Mario Party: Island Tour Review – 3DS

Posted By Eric Kelly On December 5, 2013 at 11:24 am Comments Off on Mario Party: Island Tour Review – 3DS

Mario Party Island Tour i_40703It’s been a long time since the Original Mario Party game came out for the N64, back in 1998. And it seemed that in more recent years, the series has become stale, and lacking in inspiration, merely just settling for being entertaining to those that still haven’t tired of the old formula. But Mario Party: Island Tour for the 3DS fails to even achieve that.

Being the third installment in the handheld Mario Party titles and the thirteenth overall in the franchise, it should come as little surprise that the game plays much like other entries. But the twist here is that the boards now have themes to them, and it’s not just in their presentation, but in their rule set. Some boards play like a traditional Mario Party experience where you move across a board to gain stars, to get their first, or even play boards where you need to play smart or take risks to advance. One boards rule is that the goal is to come in last rather than first. Outside of the boards, you can play any mini game at your leisure, or play Bowser’s Tower which is like a mini-game survival mode. It should sound like a good time to be had by a player and their friends, but this is the point where things falter.
